The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are where Curtis Joseph earned his paycheck while playing for the Edmonton Oilers. Joseph led the heavily undermanned Oilers to two huge upsets in the 1997 and 1998 playoffs. In '97, the Dallas Stars dropped to the Oilers in seven games and the next year the same fate was handed to the Stanley Cup favourite Colorado Avalanche.

Joseph was not at his best in the game, stopping 24 shots. Dallas scored two goals in the first period 30 seconds apart. First, Joe Nieuwendyk scored on a 40-foot wrister and then Jere Lehtinen scored off a great feed from Greg Adams. Joseph also let in a 20-foot slapshot by Bob Bassen early in the third period.

Cujo was especially strong in the second period, where he made three key saves when Dallas had a two-man advantage. "The guys helped me out tremendously tonight, clearing it out in front of the net and clearing away rebounds," Joseph said. Cujo helped the Oilers get a split with the Dallas Stars.

That's what you need from a goalie. That's what we're here for."

Mike Modano was unstoppable in the game scoring the winner with 14:42 left in the third period. Joseph was strong in the loss stopping 38 Dallas shots. The main reason the Oilers stayed in the game was because of Cujo. The Oilers were outshot 18-7 in the first period but found themselves tied at one a piece with Dallas. The Stars, backs against the wall, came through and forced a game 7 in Dallas.
Todd Marchant scores the winner for Edmonton against Andy Moog of the Stars in overtime of Game 7. The Edmonton Oilers pull off a huge upset in the best-of-seven series winning 4 games to 3. Moments earlier Curtis Joseph stoned Joe Nieuwendyk to keep the Oilers in the game.
