The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are where Curtis Joseph earned his
paycheck while playing for the Edmonton Oilers. Joseph led the heavily
undermanned Oilers to two huge upsets in the 1997 and 1998 playoffs.
In '97, the Dallas Stars dropped to the Oilers in seven games and
the next year the same fate was handed to the Stanley Cup favourite
Colorado Avalanche.

Oilers goalie Curtis Joseph blocks a shot on goal by Dallas
Stars' Bob Bassen during the first period of Game 1 in Dallas,
Texas. The Stars were the better team in Game 1, scoring
with 2:31 left in the third period to break the tie. Gilchrist
added an empty-netter with 1:03 to go. Joseph was not at
his best in the game, stopping 24 shots. Dallas scored two
goals in the first period 30 seconds apart. First, Joe Nieuwendyk
scored on a 40-foot wrister and then Jere Lehtinen scored
off a great feed from Greg Adams. Joseph also let in a 20-foot
slapshot by Bob Bassen early in the third period. |
Edmonton
Oilers defenseman Mats Lindgren knocks Dallas Stars' Darryl
Sydor off his feet during the first period of Game 2 in
Dallas. This night belonged to Curtis Joseph, who blanked
the stars and finished with 25 saves. Cujo was especially
strong in the second period, where he made three key saves
when Dallas had a two-man advantage. "The guys helped
me out tremendously tonight, clearing it out in front of
the net and clearing away rebounds," Joseph said. Cujo
helped the Oilers get a split with the Dallas Stars. |

Stars' Pat Verbeek and Mike Modano celebrate a first period
goal as Edmonton Oilers' defenceman Dan McGillis and goaltender
Curtis Joseph look on during Game 3 in Edmonton. The Oilers,
however, capped off a great comeback by winning the game
in overtime. Buchberger scored at 9:15 of overtime and Cujo
was strong with 39 saves. |

the Oilers first goal against the Dallas Stars in Game 4.
However, this night belonged to the Stars as they won by
a score of 4-3. The Oilers allowed two third period goals
by Gilchrist and Langenbrunner. Curtis Joseph was not as
strong as his colleague Andy Moog. Joseph finished with
26 saves while Moog finished with 30 saves. Moog made key
saves in the second and third periods, first stopping Grier
in the slot and then Marchant on the breakaway. |

Dallas
Stars goalie Andy Moog makes a diving stop on a shot by
Edmonton Oilers' Jason Arnott in Game 5. Moog, however,
was not able to lead his team to victory. Curtis Joseph
stopped all 43 shots as the Oilers won 1-0 in the second
overtime. Joseph was incredible in the game despite his
modest comments: "I think I made some big saves
when I needed to. That's what you need from a goalie. That's
what we're here for." |

Stars Jere Lehtinen (right) congratulates goaltender Andy
Moog after the Stars 3 - 2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers
in Game 6 of their series. Mike Modano was unstoppable in
the game scoring the winner with 14:42 left in the third
period. Joseph was strong in the loss stopping 38 Dallas
shots. The main reason the Oilers stayed in the game was
because of Cujo. The Oilers were outshot 18-7 in the first
period but found themselves tied at one a piece with Dallas.
The Stars, backs against the wall, came through and forced
a game 7 in Dallas. |

Todd
Marchant scores the winner for Edmonton against Andy Moog
of the Stars in overtime of Game 7. The Edmonton Oilers
pull off a huge upset in the best-of-seven series winning
4 games to 3. Moments earlier Curtis Joseph stoned Joe Nieuwendyk
to keep the Oilers in the game. |

Edmonton
Oilers goalie Curtis Joseph blocks a shot on goal by the
Colorado Avalanche during the third period of Game 7 in
Denver. Joseph shutout the Avalanche as the Oilers won 4-0
to advance in the playoffs. Cujo was spectacular throughout
the game finishing with 31 saves. Joseph finished the first
round of the playoffs with two straight shutouts. Patrick
Roy, on the other hand, was subpar with only 13 saves. The
Avalanche were considered one of the favourites for the
Cup in 1998 but the undermanned and undergunned Oilers managed
to lead a huge upset thanks to the heroic play of Curtis
Joseph. |
