I'm not the normal captain but I was for the JP tournament. The tournament to me was very interesting and a good learning experience for all of the team members. We improved steadily in every game defensively and we got a couple of goals too. I'll give a small summary from my point of view on every game.CAPTAIN'S CORNER (with Vesa Mikkola)
This was our first every tournament game as the ISHuskies. The game
was an ongoing srtuggle for us defensively as the numbers tell that. We
lost the first period 0-3. This was OK for our first ever period of play.
We avoided big mistakes and played considerably well against a strong opponent.
The second period, however, was very different. We lost the 2nd period
0-4. This period was filled with big mistakes that come from inexperienced
players, like us, and the opponent did not throw the chance away. All 4
goals were 2-on-1s for them. Our goalie, Juha Mikkola, was not to blame
in this game.
This game was better for us defensively. The Heinola team was a lot
better than us and they won. Our biggest reason for losing this game was
the absense of some key players like Nikko Kärki, Sam Bruhn, and the
player that never showed up, Antti Makkonen. Our goalie played well but
had no chances on the scored goals. We tired out quickly because we only
had 8 players. The opponent struck, and struck hard, resulting in a big
win for them.
This game was one of our best games in the tournament. We played well
defensively and we got a couple of goals too. We struck first early in
the 1st period. I got a pass at the left-side of the center area and I
ran quickly by the defender and sent a backhand pass to Nikko Kärki
who banged the ball into the back of the net. The Lauttasaari team, Laru,
responded quickly. Under a minute after our goal, they scored a deflection
goal that passed Juha Mikkola and tied the game at 1-1. I received a penalty
shot after a Laru defender had been in the crease of their own goal many
times. I tried to put the ball into the upper right-hand corner but without
success. The ball eneded up flying right at the opposing goaltender. Laru
scored a quick goal and the scoreline was now 1-2. Sam Bruhn sent a pass
from behind their net that bounced into the air and I was able to shoot
the ball into the upper-corner. Laru scored their 3rd goal with about 10
seconds remaining. Our defense fell asleep and they were able to score
a one-timer goal. That broke our spine in that game and we lost it 2-3.
This game was our best game in the tournament. Even though I got the
feeling that our game was very unorganized, we managed to score a goal
and play well in our own end. Juha Mikkola faced a lot of shots and was
our number one star. Nikko Kärki scored our only goal in the 2nd period.
Most part of the game was spent in our own end defending. I was rather
invisible in this game offensively, but Burak Akçal and me were
good defensively. We were down 0-2 in the 2nd, until Kärki scored
a goal with about 3 minutes remaining. The opposing team played a very
dirty game and they got a 5 minute penalty for pushing Akçal over
the side. We heated pretty much there but we avoided any penalties.
This was probably our best defensive game ever. The Nakkisormet are the number 2 team in the Finnish salibandy league and played in our end the whole game. We had a couple of chances resulting in a cross-bar shot by Edward Ahlström and a post-shot by someone else. We played good defence and Juha Mikkola played a dream game. He stopped everything but 3 shots. He must have had over 40 saves in that game.
Overall, we learned a lot in this tournament and everyone got some more experience. Below are my 3 stars of the tournament:
Vesa did a great job in this tournament, thanks for everything....Juha Mikkola, Huskies Goalie
